We currently give donations to an animal charity called Rain Rescue, Rain Rescue are based in Sheffield South Yorkshire. Rain Rescue do not take in dogs themselves anymore for rehoming due to the lack of volunteers and the high volume of dogs being dumped, but they do however take in donations to help with the vet fee's and kennel fee's for the unwanted dogs, also to buy coats and bedding plus pay for transport to help move abandoned dogs from pounds to foster homes.
Rain Rescue help all kinds of animals, which is why we have decided to support them. Our local so called 'dog rescue centre's do NOT re-home Akitas, when an Akita is found straying it is put to sleep, because they CAN have a bad reputation, all dogs COULD bite not just Akitas. Its not just our local 'rescue' centres who will not take in Akitas other are doing it too, some wont take in other breeds such as American Bulldogs and Rottweilers. At the end of the day rescue centres should look at and access the dog not the breed.
We first heard about this in November 08, when Hollie had a lady call her in a distressed state saying she needs to find her Akita a new home, she owned a public house which was devastated by the rain and storms for six months affectng business so much over the six month period she was forced into bankruptcy therefor losing her home leaving her no where else to go except her elderly mothers and to top it off her husband had serious health problems, she had rang our rescue centre and they told her "We do not rehome Akita's they are very nasty dogs and can not be trusted with anything, when strays come in to us it is our policy to have them put to sleep". This really got us angry, how could they do that? This bitches temperament was never in question and they did not access her as a dog before denying her sanctuary they just dont deal with the breed full stop. Whilst we are the first to admit that there are bad temperamnets within Akita's we believe that you should punish the deed and not the breed. Of course we did take in the lady's dog, Kuma turned out to be a gorgeous girl with an excellent temperament!! Kuma stayed with us until a suitable home came up.
Since then we have had numerous phone calls of the same nature which is why we decided to support Rain Rescue and not our local charity! We also still continue to take in stray and unwanted Akita's and find suitable homes for them.
